2012 Chevy Volt Battery Capacity – Is the Electric Hybrid Worth the MSRP?

  • Friday, August 10, 2012

Gasoline prices may have dropped a couple of cents in some places recently. But, it’s safe to say that the days of not feeling pain at the pump are gone and they aren’t coming back.  Today, many people are starting to get the hybrid itch.  We’re all getting serious about buying a car that doesn’t hurt out checking accounts.

David Stanley Chevrolet: 2012 Chevy Volt Battery Capacity – Is the Electric Hybrid Worth the MSRP?

Chevy’s answer to this problem is the Volt, a hybrid car that uses electricity as fuel. Many Oklahoma drivers have expressed concern in the 2012 Chevy Volt battery capacity.  If you’re wondering whether or not the Volt can cut it as an alternative to a traditional gas engine, read on!

2012 Chevy Volt Battery Capacity: By the Numbers

Here’s a number that should wow you—93 miles per gallon. That is the fuel mileage you can expect with the Volt.  That number is what makes the Volt perhaps the most fuel efficient vehicle on the market.

Another number you might be interested in is 375 miles on one tank of gas.  Chevrolet explains that after your initial 2012 Chevy Volt battery capacity is used up, a gas-powered generator turns on to provide electricity.  If you’re doing mostly city driving, you could go weeks without filling up your tank.  That being said, if you are driving mostly long distances, the Volt may not be the car for you.

If you’re looking for an exact battery capacity, this really depends on how you drive.  Mostly average speed trips on city streets could get you nearly 50 miles before needing the gasoline engine.

2012 Chevy Volt Battery Capacity: Charging Ahead

To answer the question that is on so many shoppers minds: No, your car will not shut off after 40 miles.  The gasoline powered generator will carry you much further.  How often, then, do you need to charge your Volt?

Chevrolet recommends a nightly charge.  While this isn’t an absolute necessity and skipping a night of charging won’t cause a major problem, Chevy has found that a nightly charge will lead to best possible operation.

Now before you start sweating your next electricity bill after buying a Volt, the car generally won’t be that much of a burden.  Some Volt owners have reported only paying between $25 and $45 for powering their volt.  While that’s a subjective assessment, it’s needless to say you won’t be paying as much as you did for gas.

2012 Chevy Volt Battery Capacity: Freedom

What the Volt really offers you is freedom from the pump.  You can expect a 2012 Chevy Volt battery capacity of between 40 and 50 miles per charge.  However, just because you’ve driven 40 miles and the initial charge is gone doesn’t mean that you’re going to get traditional mpg.  Depending on your driving, you may not have to visit the pump a handful of times per month.

Most shoppers looking for a hybrid cars hesitate when they look at the MSRP. $40,000 will make you do that.  However, you have to remember the kind of savings you’re going to be getting from not filling up the gas tank a couple of times per week.  The fuel efficiency of this vehicle is so good you will ultimately pay far less for a Volt than for a traditional gas-powered vehicle.
